Bewitching tale has Motherwell abuzz

10 January 2014
A NAKED woman claiming to be a witch who had fallen off her broomstick and landed in Motherwell, had the Port Elizabeth suburb abuzz yesterday.

Witnesses claimed on Facebook the woman had appeared out of a bush in NU9 and claimed she had fallen off her broom while travelling from Peddie to fetch three initiates.

Nkulie WaseMatshaweni said: "I have seen it. She said she was from Peddie! Her husband is a cat."

News of the naked and bewildered woman wandering the streets spread like wildfire and curious onlookers soon started gathering around the woman, taking photographs of her and posting them on Facebook.

A good Samaritan offered the woman a skirt to cover herself before she was taken to a nearby police station.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe confirmed that an incoherent woman had been brought to police shortly after 1.30pm.

"We can only assume she is mentally ill," Gwe said. "We suspect claims about her came from the community."

The woman was taken to Dora Nginza Hospital. - Hendrick Mphande
