East Cape records third-highest number of road deaths

NEARLY 200 people died on the Eastern Cape's roads over the festive season - the third highest among the provinces.

KwaZulu-Natal had the highest road death rate (284) over the same period, followed by Gauteng (268).

Releasing a preliminary report on the road death toll for December 1 to January 7, Transport Minister Dipuo Peters said 1376 people had died nationally in a total 1147 accidents.

In the Eastern Cape 190 had died. Transport spokesman Ncedo Kumbaca said the N2 between East London and Mthatha, the R61 between Mthatha and Queenstown, and the N9 from Aberdeen to Graaff-Reinet were the main problem routes.
