Clean up this filth!

PORT Elizabeth is in a sorry state after the festive season. Residents and tourists, in letters to the Herald, have complained about huge amounts of litter lying discarded, uncollected refuse bags, overgrown verges, traffic islands and parks, and the general lack of cleanliness and maintenance in the city.

Yesterday, we also reported that the Fifth Avenue waste transfer site in Walmer was nearing capacity and that the municipality was battling to clear the site after the festive season.

However, despite the flood of complaints, the municipality said yesterday it had received a lot of positive feedback regarding its cleaning over the festive season.

None so blind as those that will not see. All our visitors (incl some that used to live in PE several years ago) commented on the state the city was in. As a resident, I'm appalled at how shabby and run down it is looking. A lot of the time I feel like I'm riding around in a ghost town that was long ago abandoned, but which happens to still be populated. Perhaps the only people that have abandoned our once attractive and clean city are the very people who keep heaping praise upon themselves for doing such a wonderful job at maintaining it. How are those clothes fitting you, Emperor?
