Slabbert to stand as an independent

EXPELLED DA councillor Stanford Slabbert wants his old job back - and he is gearing up to contest as an independent in the Nelson Mandela Bay Ward 1 by-election expected to be held next month.

Slabbert, who was fired by the DA in August for circulating a racist e-mail about President Jacob Zuma and the ANC, is confident he has enough support to once again take over the reins as Summerstrand's ward councillor.

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has not yet set a date for the by-election, but a number of by-elections are due to take place around South Africa next month.
