Court finds wife acted in self-defence when killing abusive husband

A PORT Elizabeth mother has told a court how she stabbed her abusive husband to death after he accused her of having an affair and tried to beat her with a hammer.

Rene Speelman, 40, of Korsten, said she was in the process of obtaining a protection order against her husband when things got so out of hand on May 19 last year that she retaliated and ended up killing him.

She said he had assaulted her several times in the past. Speelman, however, admitted she did not act like a reasonable person might have in that situation.

But the Port Elizabeth Regional Court found she had acted in self-defence and convicted her of culpable homicide instead of murder.
