Move to curb illegal use of RDP houses

IN a bid to halt massive RDP housing abuse, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality is to develop guidelines to ensure rightful owners live in their houses.

Over the years the municipality appears to have turned a blind eye to allegations that RDP houses are being rented out to foreigners, or that some houses have two registered owners.

Some of the houses are rented out and used as spaza shops or taverns.

Last year, The Herald reported a number of cases in Motherwell where houses were registered under two owners.

And because some had come up on the housing database as having already received houses, even though they had not, they were scrapped off the list and had no chance of ever actually receiving a house.
