Robbers will hear fate today

22 January 2014
THREE men who committed a robbery at the Metlife Plaza Wimpy in Kabega Park in which a gang member was killed will be sentenced at the Port Elizabeth High Court today.

Themba Mohale, 38, of New Brighton, Thabile Matiwane, 29, of Zwide, and Bulelani Mabija, 29, of Kwazakhele were convicted on Monday of four counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances and one count of murder.

Yesterday state advocate Mbulelo Nyendwana said the court needed to consider that the man who was killed during the robbery, Nelson Mandela Bay traffic officer Mhlope Menye, was an active and willing participant in the robbery.

Menye, who was driving the getaway vehicle, died in a shoot-out with police.

Nyendwana and the defence counsel for the accused asked Judge Jannie Eksteento consider that the men had been in custody for the past four years and five months. - Lee-Anne Butler
