Hofmeyr fined R10,000: Report

23 January 2014
Afrikaans singer Steve Hofmeyr was fined R10,000 for speeding by the Bronkhorstspruit Magistrate's Court on Thursday (23/01/2014), the SABC reported.

Under the plea-bargain Hofmeyr's driver's licence would not be suspended because he drove about 12,000km a month to earn his living as an entertainer, the public broadcaster reported. He supported six people financially.

Magistrate Elsie Schnetler reportedly told the court she could see Hofmeyr had shown remorse for what he did.

Hofmeyr was arrested in Bronkhorstspruit on the night of December 19, and was released on bail of R500.

At the time, Gauteng traffic police spokeswoman Busaphi Nxumalo said Hofmeyr was caught driving 169km/h in an 80km/h zone.

Hofmeyr was charged with reckless or negligent driving and exceeding the general speed limit. During a previous appearance, he said he wanted to settle the case out of court.

On Thursday Hofmeyr told the SABC he was happy with the fine.

"We are happy with the fine, what the law says we are going with. It's a R10,000 fine that's basically my honeymoon budget," he said.

"I think as long as we have justice to fall back on as the last front it's still a pretty good country. From there on we can build it.

"My job here is not to break the law. I march against that most of the time. I don't want to be part of that problem, I want to be part of the solution," he said. - Sapa
