Red tide alert

LARGE swathes of the Eastern and southern Cape coastline have been invaded by huge patches of potentially highly toxic red tide and people are being warned not to eat shellfish.

The public warning was issued by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality yesterday and follows four weeks of sporadic sightings of red tide along more than 300km of coastline between Knysna and Port Alfred.

A marine expert said the red tide was unlike any other observed in the area before.

Yesterday, scores of Bay residents sent in pictures of the massive patches of red-coloured seawater, particularly in the Seaview area where a kilometre-wide band has been visible since the weekend.
